Who are we - and what's up with the name?
Inspired by the sad and beautiful music of Bert Jansch, Anne Briggs and Jackson C Frank, Steve Koch and Colleen Hodgson put together HMHFAS for the pure pleasure and challenge of presenting songs by those artists. Along the way we also pulled in some other dark Americana treasures from Townes, Hoyt and others.
We've been a bit coy about the name for a while but since you're all asking... here's the scoop.
'He Mistook Her For A Swan' is the refrain from the strange and beautiful traditional song Polly Vaughan. Specifically the Anne Briggs haunting version
Its a traditional song with many versions including a Canadian one from Newfoundland called Molly Brawn. Its not exactly a murder ballad, more of a manslaughter ballad and the story offers a glimpse into a changing world. What to make of it? Here are a few ideas:
